On Leithaberg, in the northern Burgenland region, centuries old winemaking tradition meets contemporary innovation. Esterházy Winery looks back on more than 300 years of viticultural history and is today one of the defining producers of a region known for authentic, mineral driven origin wines. “We combine tradition with consistently sustainable viticulture and work every year to reveal the character of Leithaberg with increasing precision,” emphasises winery director Wolfgang Hewarth.

Leithaberg, shaped by limestone and mica schist, offers ideal conditions for wines with tension, elegance and depth. Precise soil analyses, diverse microclimates, and a clear understanding of each vineyard site make it possible to express the terroir in a nuanced way.

Sustainability is far more than a buzzword. Since 2023, the vineyard has been certified organic — a step that promotes biodiversity and strengthens the resilience of the vines. A deliberate avoidance of irrigation, gentle pruning, and an in house composting system all contribute to the vines aging healthily. The goal is to reach 100 years or more.

The focus lies on Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Blaufränkisch, and Pinot Noir. Each of these grape varieties reflects the minerality of Leithaberg in its own distinctive and always elegant way. The wines are matured in oak barrels sourced from the estate’s own Leithaberg forest, complemented by clay amphorae and concrete eggs containing basalt from Esterházy’s own basalt quarry. The result is a harmonious interplay of origin, craftsmanship, and contemporary wine interpretation.

Just a few minutes from Esterházy Palace, the winery in Trausdorf welcomes visitors for cellar tours, guided tastings, and culinary experiences — a place where three centuries of wine knowledge come to life.
