We met up with them to find out more about their top van destinations across Germany, Switzerland and Austria. “For us, travelling in a van means freedom, nature, and the opportunity to discover places off the beaten track. We’ve found our absolute favourite spots in the Alpine regions of Switzerland, Austria, and Germany – full of magic, tranquility, and authentic experiences,” says Franzi from @franzi.und.dennis.

Switzerland – on the road in Valais and on Lake Geneva

“For us, Switzerland is the perfect vanlife country: compact, clean and incredibly diverse,” explains Dennis. The pair were particularly fascinated by the Valais region, where high mountain panoramas and crystal-clear lakes converge in a very small space. A real highlight: the Moiry reservoir in the municipality of Anniviers. Nestled between glaciers and rocks, the turquoise lake appears almost surreal – “and the path there via the serpentine roads is a little adventure in itself,” add Dennis and Franzi.

They tell me that a very special natural phenomenon lies not far away: the Lac Souterrain de St-Léonard, Europe’s largest underground lake. A quiet boat ride through the illuminated cave creates an almost mystical atmosphere. According to Dennis, “it was an experience that will stay with us for a long time”.

The couple add that Lac Bleu near Arolla offers goosebump-inducing hikes. The name says it all: The water is a vibrant blue and nestled beautifully in the mountain landscape.

“The crowning finale for us was a detour to Lake Geneva. The famous Château de Chillon near Villeneuve – a moated castle with views of the Alps – looks like something out of a fantasy film. Combined with a stroll through Montreux with its palm trees, promenades, and Mediterranean flair, it was a day full of contrasts,” adds Franzi.

Austria – Experience natural diversity in Tyrol

“When we think of van life in Austria, we think of green valleys, clear waterfalls, and tranquil mountain lakes. We’re particularly fond of the Tyrol region – ideal for active days and quiet evenings in the van,” says Dennis and adds: “One of our favourite destinations is the Geisterklamm Gorge near Leutasch. This spectacular gorge hike leads over narrow walkways and platforms alongside rushing waterfalls – and is guaranteed to get your heart racing. Completely different, but equally impressive, was our visit to an organic alpaca farm in Seefeld. The quiet, mindful encounter with the animals was a soothing contrast to the hustle and bustle of the world outside.”

“In the Zillertal Valley, a hike to the Kreuzjoch along the Zillertal High Alpine Road is a must,” adds Franzi. “The views of the surrounding peaks are breathtaking – especially if you start early and catch the sunrise. Water lovers shouldn’t miss the Kaltenbach Waterfall: a hidden natural gem in the middle of the forest.”

Their ultimate tip for Austria: Many of the most beautiful places can only be reached on foot – so pack your hiking boots and always leave some time for spontaneous exploration. For your van, Tyrol offers many smaller campsites in beautiful locations, often with mountain views.

Germany – Natural idyll in the Black Forest

Heading to Germany instead with your van? Dennis suggests: “For us, the Black Forest is one of the most diverse vanlife destinations in Germany. The region around Lake Titisee immediately enchanted us with its mix of deep green forests, clear lakes, and cozy villages.”

Lake Titisee itself is a wonderful place to relax – enjoy breakfast overlooking the water in the morning, paddle in the afternoon, or simply enjoy the sunset from the shore. There are numerous hiking trails in the surrounding area, such as through the Wutach Gorge or up the Feldberg, the highest peak in the Black Forest.

“We particularly enjoyed the mix of nature and tradition: wooden house architecture, Black Forest gateau in small cafés, and the chimes of an old village church as the soundtrack to our evening in the van,” explains Franzi.

Their tip for Germany? “The Black Forest is charming in every season – in spring the meadows bloom, in summer the lakes beckon, and in autumn the forests glow a warm gold,” says Franzi and Dennis adds: If you arrive early, you’ll find several natural campsites in the region, often in stunning secluded locations on the edge of the forest or with mountain views.”

“For us, a good van trip isn’t just about beautiful places, but also about the little moments in between – a coffee with a view, an unplanned detour, or the quiet nighttime silence in the middle of the mountains. The Alpine regions of Switzerland, Austria, and Germany offer the perfect backdrop: wild, tranquil, and full of surprises,” conclude Franzi and Dennis.
