The focus of the Cologne ceramics brand onomao lies on the table. The company works together with manufacturers in Portugal to create timeless pieces that people want to use for a long time. For onomao, functionality and design go hand in hand.
“Everything we develop has to do with how we set tables, how food is served and eaten,” says co-founder Arthur Wystrychowski. With every new collection, the team not only focuses on the design, but also looks at what customers really need. Years of experience help in making the right decisions, for example, regarding plate sizes, so that a plate not only looks beautiful in pictures but also works well in everyday life. How does a mug feel in the hand? Can bowls be stacked easily in the cupboard? “These are things that nobody consciously notices, but it determines whether a product is used or whether it rests at the back of the shelf.”
The Aberta collection is a perfect example of the company’s philosophy: it is kept simple, yet a fine hand-painted line on the rim creates a subtle coloured accent. “The rim is the only detail, but it immediately reveals that someone worked on it by hand. No two rims are the same.”
In general, a great deal of craftmanship goes into onomao’s products. The company collaborates with manufactories in Portugal that combine traditional methods with modern design standards. Sustainability plays an important role as well, even though Arthur Wystrychowski points out some limits: “Ceramics are an energy-intensive products, there is no sugarcoating that.”
Products that combine beauty and long-lasting use
onomao began with the idea of two brothers: Arthur and Felix Wystrychowski never trained in the ceramics industry, but they wanted to develop beautiful products and items people will use for a long time. “We wanted to build a company that we could fully stand behind. A company where people enjoy working, and where customers are satisfied,” says Arthur Wystrychowski. “From the original idea grew an attitude that we still hold today: we want to make things that last.”
Today, onomao consists of a small, owner-managed team. “The collections found in our online shop and at major retailers are developed and managed by a handful of people. Whoever decides about a product has held it in their hands.” This proximity can be felt in every single product.
