TEXT: MARILENA STRACKE
Spring has finally arrived and there are plenty of great events to look forward to throughout the month of April. From Easter markets to music festivals and city marathons, our Culture Calendar has got you covered.
VIENNESE EASTER MARKET AT SCHÖNBRUNN CASTLE, VIENNA (2 – 19 APRIL)
The Easter markets across Vienna are a true highlight of the season – greatly appreciated by both locals and tourists. Located at the famous Schönbrunn Castle, this market presents around 70 exhibitors from Austria and abroad. Find inspiration for your own Easter egg decorations and make sure to take a little souvenir home with you.
BERLIN HALF MARATHON (3 APRIL)
This half marathon across the German capital is also referred to as ‘The fastest sightseeing tour in sneakers’ and attracts over 30,000 passionate runners each year. It is open to runners, wheelchair users and inline skaters, and promises to be great fun.
FESTTAGE BERLIN (6 – 17 APRIL)
Mozart, the Viennese classical composer who never ceases to fascinate, is the focus of this year’s edition of Festtage Berlin (‘festival days of Berlin’). The festival is a unique collaboration between star conductor Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin. One of the most prominent orchestras of all, the Viennese Philharmonic, will perform at the traditional Easter Festival.
CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL, BERLIN (9 – 10 APRIL)
When we see cherry blossoms all around us, we know that spring has definitely arrived. This beautiful festival in Berlin celebrates the stunning Japanese cherry blossoms that fill the Gärten der Welt in Berlin’s Mahrzahn. The pastel-coloured scenery attracts around 25,000 guests to welcome spring each year.
MARATHON, ZURICH (10 APRIL)
The Zurich marathon brings professionals and beginners together every year. The idyllic route along Lake Zurich and across the city centre is a lovely way to kickstart marathon season. A real highlight in the marathon event calendar, that many flock to each year.
SECHSELÄUTEN SPRING FESTIVAL, ZURICH (22 APRIL)
This traditional festival is Switzerland’s way to welcome in the spring and reminds one a little of the ‘groundhog weather forecaster’ in the USA. However, here a snowman figure called ‘Böögg’ is placed on the top of a bonfire. It is then ‘asked’ to forecast the weather for the coming summer. The fire is lit and the faster it reaches the Böögg, the warmer summer will be. Certainly, a unique spectacle not to be missed.
SPRING FUN FAIR, MUNICH (22 APRIL – 08 MAY)
The traditional spring fun fair, called ‘Frühlingsfest’ in German, could also be seen as the smaller sister of the legendary Oktoberfest, as it has two big beer tents and pretzels on offer as far as the eye can see. Over 100 different rides and attractions invite guests to let their hair down and have some fun.
RECORD STORE DAY, BERLIN (23 APRIL)
All over the world, independent record stores, including Berlin’s vinyl and indie music specialists, open their doors to celebrate this special day in style. The tradition originally started in the US, but the idea has been continuously spreading to Europe, Asia and Australia, and this year marks its 15th anniversary. www.recordstoredaygermany.de
