An investigative focus on sustainability characterises the latest adaptive reuse project developed by Caramel architects.

“We always try to question everything, which is exactly why we come up with new or unusual solutions,” says architect and partner Claudia Rockstroh. “To this end, we look very closely at building materials, and ask: what exactly makes them ecological?” According to Rockstroh, there are many materials available today that are advertised as recycled or upcycled. However, these labels can often go hand in hand with high energy consumption in the production process: “That’s why we believe it makes the most sense to implement existing materials 1:1 – genuine reuse!”

Carage: New Work and adaptive reuse

The multi-award-winning firm based in Vienna and Linz is currently celebrating its in-house passion project Carage, for which a former workshop/garage from the 30s was transformed into a new, open working environment. Here, genuine reuse was implemented in the true sense of the word. “For example, existing garage doors were installed as room dividers,” explains the architect, “and within a radius of 50 kilometres, we collected all the glass blocks from private sellers and set them up as walls.” New surfaces were created from a variety of carpet patterns from previous projects, while the multitude of used railings had already been stored for years at the in-house locksmith’s. Together, the choice and combination of the used materials create a new, unique aesthetic.

The project came about rather by chance. “In spring 2023, we came across this great garage in a Vienna backyard,” recalls Rockstroh. “It all started with spatial considerations on the topic of New Work, on which we have gained a lot of experience and even written a book over the last decade. The theme of reuse meanwhile took shape gradually through working with the object, not least through countless visits to the construction site.” With Carage, the team has created both a new home for the Vienna office and an exemplary New Work project: “We want to continue promoting reuse and, above all, building within existing structures. However, particularly in competitions, the awareness of working with existing structures rather than demolishing them and building new ones is not yet very widespread! We hope that we can do our part as planners to contribute to the battle against climate change.”

As a traditional competition office with many projects in the public sector, Caramel is also open to private commissions: “Our private clients – mostly interested in the single-family home sector – are usually looking for something unique. Which is exactly what they get!”

Carage by Caramel: Nachhaltig-innovative neue Arbeitswelten

Ein investigativer Fokus auf Nachhaltigkeit und Re-Use zeichnet das neueste Bestandsprojekt von Caramel Architekt*innen aus.

„Wir versuchen, immer alles zu hinterfragen und kommen deshalb auf teils neue oder ungewöhnliche Lösungen”, eröffnet Architektin und Partnerin Claudia Rockstroh das Interview: „Insbesondere schauen wir bei Materialien sehr genau: Was macht sie ökologisch?” Mittlerweile seien sehr viele Materialien auf dem Markt, die mit Re- oder Upcycling werben, so Rockstroh. Das sei zwar positiv, doch gehe dieses Label manchmal mit einem hohen Energieaufwand im Produktionsprozess einher: „Daher finden wir es am konsequentesten, gebrauchte Materialien 1:1 wieder zu nutzen – echtes Re-Use eben!”

CARAGE: New Work trifft Re-Use

Das vielfach ausgezeichnete Büro mit Sitz in Wien und Linz feiert derzeit ein Herzensprojekt in eigener Sache: Die Carage. Eine ehemalige Autowerkstatt und spätere Garage aus den 30er Jahren wurde zur neuen, offenen Arbeitswelt, wobei echtes Re-Use hier wortwörtlich umgesetzt wurde: „Vorhandene Garagentore wurden als Raumtrenner im Inneren eingebaut”, erläutert die Architektin. „In einem Umkreis von 50km haben wir außerdem alle Glasbausteine von privaten Verkäufern zusammengesucht und als Wände aufgestellt.” Neue Oberflächen entstanden aus einer Vielzahl von Teppichmustern von vorherigen Projekten; während die Vielfalt an Geländern bereits über Jahre beim hauseigenen Schlosser gelagert wurden und nun zum Einsatz kamen. Durch die Wahl und letztendlich auch die bewusste Fügung der gebrauchten Materialien entstand eine neue, ganz eigene Ästhetik.

Doch wie kam es eigentlich dazu? „Im Frühjahr 2023 stießen wir auf diese tolle Garage in einem Wiener Hinterhof”, erinnert sich Rockstroh. „Angefangen hatte es mit räumlichen Überlegungen zum Thema New Work, über das wir im letzten Jahrzehnt viel Erfahrung gesammelt und sogar ein Buch geschrieben haben. Das Thema Re-Use verfestigte sich nach und nach durch die Arbeit mit dem Objekt, nicht zuletzt durch die unzähligen Baustellenbesuche.” Mit der Carage hat Caramel sich zugleich ein neues Zuhause und ein exemplarisches New-Work-Projekt geschaffen: „Wir möchten das Thema Re-Use und vor allem das Bauen im Bestand weiter forcieren; merken aber, dass gerade bei Wettbewerben das Bewusstsein, eher mit dem Bestand umzugehen als abzureißen und neu zu bauen, noch nicht sehr verbreitet ist! Wir wünschen uns, dass wir unseren Teil als Planer*innen zur Klimawende beitragen können.”

Als klassisches Wettbewerbsbüro mit vielen Projekten im öffentlichen Sektor ist Caramel auch für private Aufträge offen, so die Architektin: „Private Kund*innen – oft im Einfamilienhausbereich – suchen bei uns eher etwas Ungewöhnliches. Was sie dann auch bekommen!”
