A massage given to a baby by a parent, positively affects the baby’s development and the parent-baby bond. The Swiss chapter of the International Association for Baby Massage IAIM, teaches parents how to give their baby a massage and provides background information and space for discussion.

“A massage is a special moment where the parent’s attention is completely focused on the baby,” says the president of the Swiss chapter Wilma Amrein-Good. This strengthens their bond and also gives parents a better understanding of how their child communicates through body language: “Usually parents begin to attend classes when their baby is around one to three months old. At this age, parent and baby are still getting to know each other,” says Wilma Amrein-Good.

Massaging positively affects the circulatory, muscular and skeletal system and even helps with the development of awareness of balance and body position. The massage also lowers stress hormones in both the baby and the parent.

In five sessions the participants learn the massage routine developed by IAIM-founder Vimala McClure. Within each session, time is also devoted to discussing the related benefits as well as the various challenges and celebrations that come with the beginning of parenthood.
