Art, design, fashion and architecture: MAK Vienna brings together over 160 years of creativity, spanning Viennese classics to digital visions of the present day.

MAK is the second oldest museum of applied arts in the world. Founded in 1863 as the Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry, it stands for the fruitful combination of past and future. With its collection of over 900,000 objects and printed works covering five centuries – from the famous Thonet bentwood chairs and furniture designs of Viennese Modernism to contemporary design responses to the challenges of our time – it is one of the most important museums of its kind in the world. With numerous special exhibitions, MAK also spans the spectrum from applied art, design, architecture and fashion to contemporary visual and digital art.

Until January 2026, MAK is showing video installations by Berlin-based artist, filmmaker and author Hito Steyerl. In her works, she explores the latest technologies such as artificial intelligence and develops interdisciplinary works in the focus of fine arts.

With the exhibition BICYCLE & LOBSTER – Sparkling Tree Decorations from Gablonz, MAK presents a fascinating selection of several hundred exhibits from the heyday of Christmas tree decorations – ranging from the 1920s to the 1980s.

From 1 October, the exhibition TURNING PAGES – Artists’ Books of the Present will show how the medium of the book transcends traditional boundaries of image, text and material to create poetic visions.

Willkommen im MAK – Museum für angewandte Kunst, Wien

Kunst, Design, Mode und Architektur: Das MAK Wien vereint über 160 Jahre Kunst und Gestaltung, von Wiener Klassikern bis zu digitalen Visionen der Gegenwart.

Das MAK ist das zweitälteste Museum für angewandte Kunst weltweit. Gegründet 1863 als kaiser-königliches Österreichisches Museum für Kunst und Industrie steht es für die fruchtbare Verbindung von Vergangenheit und Zukunft. Mit seiner Sammlung von über 900.000 Objekten und Druckwerken aus fünf Jahrhunderten – von den berühmten Thonet-Bugholzsesseln und Möbelentwürfen der Wiener Moderne bis hin zu zeitgenössischen Designantworten auf die Herausforderungen unserer Zeit – zählt es zu den bedeutendsten Museen seiner Art weltweit. Darüber hinaus spannt das MAK mit zahlreichen Sonderausstellungen den Bogen von angewandter Kunst, Design, Architektur und Mode bis hin zur zeitgenössischen bildenden und digitalen Kunst.

Noch bis Januar 2026 zeigt das MAK Videoinstallationen der in Berlin lebenden Künstlerin, Filmemacherin und Autorin Hito Steyerl. In ihren Arbeiten setzt sie sich mit neuesten Technologien wie künstlicher Intelligenz auseinander und entwickelt interdisziplinäre Werke an der Schnittstelle zur bildenden Kunst.

Ab dem 24. September 2025 präsentiert das MAK mit der Ausstellung FAHRRAD UND HUMMER – Funkelnder Baumschmuck aus Gablonz eine faszinierende Auswahl von mehreren hundert Exponaten aus der Blütezeit des Christbaumschmucks – von den 1920er- bis zu den 1980er-Jahren.

Die Ausstellung TURNING PAGES – Künstler*innenbücher der Gegenwart zeigt ab 01. Oktober 2025 wie mit dem Medium Buch traditionelle Grenzen von Bild, Text und Material überschritten werden, um poetische Visionen zu entwerfen.
