Becoming a world citizen out in the countryside

T he idyllic boarding school Marienau is tucked away on the edge of Luneburg Heath. Open, friendly and with a typical North-German down-to-earth attitude, Marienau offers an international community that goes far beyond the standard curriculum. Here, individual support and cultural exchange take place in a remarkably relaxed atmosphere.

‘In Hamburg, fur is worn inwards’, goes the translation of a delightfully North-German saying. Marienau School is roughly 80 kilometres away from the Hanseatic city and promotes a similar attitude. Instead of fancy school uniforms you will find a more down-to-earth approach and a focus on humanity here. As an official UNESCO Associated School, great importance is placed on a democratic and multicultural school community, where students become tolerant world citizens.

The boarding school’s premises, with its former manor house, is reminiscent of an enchanted park where the sun shines gently through the leaves of the surrounding trees. When visiting this place, you immediately notice the friendly atmosphere and the many spoken languages – it’s as if a small insight into a peaceful global community is on display here.

The students seem relaxed and open-minded. This is not only due to small class sizes of around 15 pupils and individual support options, but it’s also thanks to the multi-professional team of teachers, social education workers and a school psychologist. They guarantee comprehensive care for roughly 200 students, of which 30 are always from abroad.

“Because of the small class sizes and groups of boarders, there’s a homely atmosphere, and the parents and kids immediately feel that,” explains Heike Elz, the resident principal of both the school and the boarding school. “With 100 employees, we can focus on individualism. We want to be available for every human being. It’s not the students who have to fit in, but it’s us walking towards them.”

It’s possible to attend the secondary school either as a boarder or as an external student. The final qualification is the German Abitur, which is increasingly gaining international popularity.

There are plenty of leisure activities: Lower-Saxony is known as horse country, so it’s not uncommon to find the beautiful animals are completely at home on the school premises. From sports, music and theatre to excursions and barbecues, it’s never boring. That the students generally take a lot of responsibility and actively participate in school life goes without saying.

In der Provinz zum Weltbürger

Versteckt am Rande der Lüneburger Heide liegt das idyllische Internatsgymnasium Marienau. Offen, freundlich und mit einer typisch norddeutschen Bodenständigkeit bietet die Schule Marienau eine internationale Gemeinschaft, bei der es weit über das reine Lernen hinaus geht. Hier finden individuelle Förderung und kultureller Austausch in einer erstaunlich entspannten Atmosphäre statt.

„In Hamburg trägt man den Pelz nach innen“ lautet ein herrlich norddeutsches Sprichwort. Auch in der Schule Marienau, rund 80 Kilometer von der Hansestadt entfernt, findet man keine polierten Schuluniformen, sondern viel Bodenständigkeit und Menschlichkeit. Als offizielle UNESCO-Projektschule wird großen Wert auf eine demokratische, multikulturelle Schulgemeinschaft gelegt, in welcher sich die Schüler zu toleranten Weltbürgern entwickeln können.

Das Internatsgelände mit dem ehemaligen Gutshof erinnert an einen verwunschenen Park, bei dem die Sonne sanft durch die Blätter der umliegenden Bäume schimmert. Schaut man hier vorbei, fällt einem sofort die freundliche Atmosphäre, aber auch die vielen gesprochenen Sprachen auf – so als würde hier ein kleines Stück friedliche Globalität leben.

Die Schüler wirken entspannt und aufgeschlossen. Dazu trägt neben den kleinen Klassenstärken von ca. 15 Schülern und individuellen Förderungsangeboten, sicherlich auch das multiprofessionelle Team aus Lehrern, Sozialpädagogen und einem Schulpsychologen bei. Die ca. 200-köpfige heterogene Schülergemeinschaft, von denen 30 immer aus dem Ausland kommen, wird umfassend betreut.

„Durch die kleinen Klassenstärken und Gruppen im Internat herrscht bei uns eine sehr familiäre Atmosphäre und das spüren die Eltern und Kinder sofort“, erklärt Schul- und Internatsleiterin Heike Elz, die auch selbst auf dem Campus wohnt. „Mit unseren 100 Mitarbeitern können wir auf den Individualismus eingehen. Wir wollen für jeden Menschen da sein. Nicht die Schüler müssen zu uns passen, sondern wir gehen auf sie zu.“

Das Gymnasium kann man als Internatsschüler oder als externer Schüler besuchen. Die Qualifikation nach Abschluss ist das Deutsche Abitur, welches immer mehr internationalen Zuspruch findet.

Freizeitaktivitäten gibt es viele. Da Niedersachsen typisches Pferdeland ist, sind die imposanten Vierbeiner natürlich auch auf dem Schulgelände zuhause. Von Sport, Musik und Theater bis zu Ausflügen und Grillabenden, für Unterhaltung ist gesorgt. Dass die Schüler selbst grundsätzlich viel Verantwortung übernehmen und sich am Schulleben beteiligen, ist selbstverständlich.

Dieses Jahr feiert die Schule ihr 90. Jubiläum. Sicherlich ein guter Anlass, um Marienau einmal selbst zu besuchen und sich vor Ort verzaubern zu lassen.
