Specialists in Riesling, Knebel winery is based in the Mosel region of Germany. There, the Knebel winery cultivates almost eight hectares of vineyards on the steepest slopes of Terrassenmoselle – the name given to the lower reaches of the Moselle river.

Knebel’s philosophy is based on respect – respect for the land and respect for the winery’s heritage, which dates back to 1642. The winery’s adherence to traditional, natural wine principles means their patience allows for nature’s processes to develop in their own time. Applying this approach to their cellar techniques means they renounce cultured yeasts, fining agents, de-acidification, and the use of must for sweetening. They also take their time for pre-fermentation maceration, encourage slow fermentation and long ageing on the fine lees.

Their characterful wines are ambassadors of Knebel’s culture – uniting the traditional Riesling grape variety with the steep vineyards slate rich soil and natural viticulture processes. The result is a diverse range of Rieslings that have depth, elegance and a distinctive personality. Here are three of The WineBarn favourites.

Knebel 2022 Riesling Alte Reben (Old Vines) dry

£37.10 per bottle

A dry Riesling with incredible concentration and delicate elegance.
The grapes that produced this Riesling were from old vines (alte reben) that are around 60-80 years old. Grown sustainably, the vines are situated on a traditional terrace site that has soil rich slate, sandstone, loess and quartzite. This wine is an ambassador of its terroir.

Knebel 2022 Uhlen Riesling Grand Cru dry

£55.99 per bottle

Pure slate and cool elegance, this Riesling Grand Cru has lots of spice and herbaceousness on the nose. A complex, deep and extremely powerful dry white wine, it is incredibly elegant, salty and taut – exactly how you’d want it!

Knebel 2022 Röttgen Riesling Spätlese fruity

£47.35 per bottle

A very fine, elegant and balanced Kabinett. It has a subtle fruit sweetness, is very fresh and offers pure drinking pleasure.
Grapes were grown in the highest part of the Röttgen vineyard, which has 30-40 year old vines and is slightly hidden from the sun. Here, the high iron and mineral content of the soil can be seen in the rusty brown and yellow colours of the rocks.
