Anyone who engages with Alia Alexandra Lammel’s paintings can practically feel the salt in the air and the sound of the waves. The sea is her central motif, but not as a postcard-perfect idyll; rather, as a vibrant, sometimes untamed element. Lammel’s credo “to feel the sea and its energy” runs like a thread through her artistic career.

Some of her works are created on board. She says: “For me, sailing and painting are two sides of the same coin: both begin with vastness and infinity – the sea or the canvas. The sailboat, as a plaything of nature on the water, is a metaphor for the beauty and power of nature. This is precisely where my visual language is fed – colours, light and shadow, contrasts, movement.” Sailing is both a source and an inspiration: “On the vastness of the oceans, surrounded by water and the deep blue, you come back to what is essential. This is the feeling I want to convey through my art.”

The art of embracing life

Behind the artist is an extraordinary personality. Alia Alexandra Lammel is curious, adventurous, and full of energy. Her openness to new experiences, coupled with a deep love of nature, is reflected in all her works. She explains: “The many facets of the sea inspire my paintings. Like a wave pushing a ship from behind, my palette knife glides across the canvas. The reflections of the clouds, the landscape, the water’s surface, the sun’s rays, the immeasurable vastness and depth of the sea, the light and shadow of nature form my palette – from dark and menacing to colourful, bright, and luminous.”

The artist has been drawing since childhood, studied stage and costume design, and gained international experience as a lecturer, art director and editor. Since 2016, she has dedicated herself to painting as an independent artist, inspired by the sea, wind and sailing. “I had a strong connection to sailing from a young age through my parents and grandparents,” says Lammel. “I discovered and fell in love with sailing on the Bavarian lakes.”

Lammel uses oil and acrylic paints on canvas as her artistic medium. A key stylistic device is the palette knife technique, which allows her to create structures and layers reminiscent of the movement and diversity of water. With bold, often contrasting colours and dynamic forms, she brings the sea’s energy and unpredictability to the canvas. “This allows me to apply the paint with vigour and intensity, letting the power and dynamism of nature flow into the palette knife. This suits my subject matter because it makes waves, wind edges, and light reflections tangible – like a trail sailing across the canvas,” says Lammel.

Between Munich and life on board

Lammel’s creative work takes place both in her studio in Munich and in her studio on board. These two workspaces could hardly be more different, yet they complement each other perfectly. While the Munich studio offers space for reflection, planning and technical development, the studio on board is characterised by spontaneity and immediate inspiration from its surroundings. This duality lends her art an extraordinary depth and complexity.

Lammel’s perhaps most astonishing project to date is painting on board her boat during her circumnavigation of the globe from 2019 to 2025, for which she and her partner, along with their cat Coco, covered 37,522 nautical miles. This journey was not only a sporting and logistical adventure, but also an artistic experiment. Under changing weather conditions, with constantly new impressions and challenges, she created works that translate her experiences into colour and form – much like a travel diary.

“The most memorable moments are often not the spectacular ones, but the quiet ones: nights when the horizon disappears, the ship glides over dark water and suddenly everything fluoresces – marine life of all kinds and dolphins whose shimmering trails can be seen from afar. This experience – vastness above me, vastness below me – is the core of why I paint,” says Lammel.

Alia Alexandra Lammel’s work has garnered international attention; her paintings have been shown at the Florence Biennale and in renowned galleries and exhibitions. Her sailing achievements have also been featured in prominent publications such as the magazines Yacht and Segeln.

Ihre Werke entstehen zum Teil direkt an Bord. Sie sagt: „Segeln und Malen sind für mich zwei Seiten derselben Sache: beides beginnt mit einer großen Weite und Unendlichkeit – dem Meer oder der Leinwand. Das Segelboot als Spielball der Natur auf dem Wasser ist für mich eine Metapher für die Schönheit und Macht der Natur. Genau daraus speist sich meine Bildsprache – Farben, Licht und Schatten, Kontraste, Bewegung.” Dabei ist Segeln Quelle und Inspiration: „Auf der Weite der Ozeane, umgeben von Wasser und einem tiefen Blau, bringt einen zurück zum Wesentlichen. Dieses Gefühl möchte ich durch meine Kunst vermitteln.”

Die Kunst, das Leben zu umarmen

Hinter der Künstlerin steht eine außergewöhnliche Persönlichkeit. Alia Alexandra Lammel ist neugierig, abenteuerlustig und voller Tatendrang. Ihre Offenheit für Neues, gepaart mit einer tiefen Liebe zur Natur, spiegelt sich in all ihren Werken wider. Sie erklärt: „Die vielen Facetten des Meeres inspirieren meine Gemälde. Wie eine Welle, die das Schiff von hinten anschiebt, gleitet mein Spachtel über die Leinwand. Die Spiegelungen der Wolken, der Landschaft, Reflexionen des Wassers, die Sonnenstrahlen, die unermessliche Weite und Tiefe des Meeres, das Licht und der Schatten der Natur bilden meine Palette – von dunkel und bedrohlich bis farbenfroh, hell und leuchtend.”

Die Künstlerin hat von klein auf gezeichnet, studierte Bühnen- und Kostümbild, und sammelte internationale Erfahrungen als Dozentin, Art Direktorin und Redakteurin. Seit 2016 widmet sie sich als unabhängige Künstlerin der Malerei, inspiriert von Meer, Wind und Segelsport. „Ein intensiver Bezug zum Segeln war von klein auf durch meine Eltern und Grosseltern gegeben”, sagt Lammel. “So lernte ich auf den bayerischen Seen den Segelsport kennen und lieben.”

Als künstlerisches Medium verwendet Lammel Öl- und Acrylfarben auf Leinwand. Ein zentrales Stilmittel ist dabei die Spachteltechnik. Sie erlaubt es ihr, Strukturen und Schichtungen zu schaffen, die an die Bewegung und Vielfalt des Wassers erinnern. Mit kräftigen, oft kontrastreichen Farben und dynamischen Formen bringt sie die Energie und Unberechenbarkeit des Meeres auf die Leinwand. „Dadurch kann ich die Farbe schwungvoll und intensiv auftragen und so die Kraft und Dynamik der Natur in die Spachtel über gehen lassen”, so Lammel. „Das passt zu meinem Thema, weil es Wellen, Windkanten und Lichtreflexe körperlich macht – wie eine Spur, die über die Leinwand „segelt”.

Zwischen München und dem Bordleben

Lammels kreatives Schaffen findet sowohl in ihrem Atelier in München als auch im „Atelier an Bord” statt. Diese beiden Arbeitsorte könnten unterschiedlicher kaum sein und doch ergänzen sie sich perfekt. Während das Atelier in München Raum für Reflexion, Planung und technische Ausarbeitung bietet, ist das Atelier an Bord geprägt von Spontanität und unmittelbarer Inspiration durch die Umgebung. Diese Dualität verleiht ihrer Kunst eine außergewöhnliche Tiefe und Vielschichtigkeit.

Lammels bisher vielleicht außergewöhnlichstes Projekt ist das Malen an Bord während ihrer Weltumsegelung von 2019 bis 2025, für die sie und ihr Partner, samt Katze Coco, 37.522 Seemeilen zurücklegten. Diese Reise war nicht nur ein sportliches und logistisches Abenteuer, sondern auch ein künstlerisches Experiment. Unter wechselnden Wetterbedingungen, mit ständig neuen Eindrücken und Herausforderungen, entstanden Werke, die das Erlebte in Farbe und Form übersetzen – wie ein Reisetagebuch.

„Die eindrücklichsten Momente sind oft nicht die spektakulären, sondern die stillen: Nächte, in denen der Horizont verschwindet, das Schiff über dunkles Wasser gleitet und plötzlich alles fluoresziert – Meereslebewesen aller Art und Delfine, deren schimmernde Spur man schon von Weitem sieht. Diese Erfahrung – Weite über mir, Weite unter mir – ist für mich der Kern dessen, warum ich male”, so Lammel.

Alia Alexandra Lammels Schaffen findet internationale Beachtung; gezeigt werden ihre Bilder etwa auf der Biennale in Florenz und in renommierten Galerien und Ausstellungen. Ihre seglerischen Leistungen wurde zudem in bekannten Medien wie der Yacht und dem Magazin Segeln vorgestellt.
