KOLK 17: Lübeck’s most surprising cultural venue

Lübeck is famous for its Holstentor, marzipan and the Buddenbrooks. Yet anyone who wants to truly get to know the city should take a detour to Kolk, one of Lübeck’s oldest alleys, UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to KOLK 17.

Here, behind historic walls lies a venue that brings together museum, puppet theatre and research under one roof. With more than 20,000 puppets from Europe, Asia and Africa in its collection and the award-winning permanent exhibition Puppetry – Game of Life, interactive hands-on stations and a vibrant stage, KOLK 17 offers truly distinctive experiences.

“Most museums collect, most theatres perform. We do both, and this changes peoples’ perception,” explains the team at KOLK 17. A puppet in a museum and the very same puppet on stage are two different things. This moment of encounter in one place is rarely found anywhere else in Europe.

The house raises unexpected questions: Who is moving whom? Where does our own body end, and where does the other begin? Thoughts that are at the heart of the art of puppetry and musings that become tangible the moment you hold a puppet in your own hand.

Since 2025, KOLK 17 has brought together theatre, museum, education and research under one roof. Honoured with three awards in 2026, the venue continues to grow and develop.

KOLK 17: Lübecks überraschendste Kulturbühne

Lübeck ist berühmt für das Holstentor, Marzipan und die Buddenbrooks. Wer die Stadt wirklich kennenlernen will, sollte einen Abstecher in den Kolk machen: eine der ältesten Gassen Lübecks, UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe und Heimat von KOLK 17.

Hinter historischen Mauern verbirgt sich ein Haus, das Museum, Figurentheater und Forschung an einem Ort vereint. Mit über 20.000 Figuren aus Europa, Asien und Afrika im Depot und in der preisgekrönten Dauerausstellung Figurentheater – Spiel des Lebens mit Spielstationen zum Anfassen und einer lebendigen Theaterbühne, ist das KOLK 17 Kulisse für besondere Erlebnisse.

„Die meisten Museen sammeln, die meisten Theater spielen. Wir tun beides, und das verändert die Wahrnehmung”, so das Team von KOLK 17. Eine Figur im Museum und dieselbe Figur auf der Bühne sind zwei völlig verschiedene Dinge. Diesen Moment des Aufeinandertreffens an einem Ort gibt es europaweit selten.

Das Haus stellt Fragen, die man nicht erwartet: Wer bewegt hier eigentlich wen? Wo hört der eigene Körper auf und wo fängt das Andere an? Das ist der Kern der Kunstform. Und das merkt man spätestens dann, wenn man selbst eine Figur in der Hand hält.

Seit 2025 vereint KOLK 17 Theater, Museum, Vermittlung und Forschung. Ein Haus, das 2026 dreifach ausgezeichnet wurde und noch lange nicht fertig ist.
